My plan for today was to go to Ostia Antica, a city that used to be Rome’s port city many hundreds of years ago. Over the years silt from the Tiber buried it so it remains well-preserved. Because I knew I wasn’t going to make it to Pompeii this trip I was really excited to see this place. It took about 45 minutes to get there. And it was closed. Oh well.
Disappointment is a constant when travelling. But you learn in the long run none of it matters. You will waste time, waste money, end up in uncomfortable situations, get lost, feel lonely, and deal with awful people, but at the end of the day life moves on. Tomorrow will be different. The next place you go to will be different. If I was only travelling for a week I might be angrier that I “wasted’ a day, but when you are travelling for a month things are a lot different.
I spent the rest of the day reading in a park next to a castle, listening to George Watsky’s new album, eating some delicious cannelloni, and discovering a pyramid in Rome. Despite the disappointment of the morning, I’ve had a pretty good day. And I am going to meet up with my sister tonight!
